Comparing Selfies Across Time
Both of these photographs are over 300 years apart! They both have similar expressions with the mouth open, the eyes wide and the way they are leaning.
Own Made Selfies
These are my 3 favourite (but stupid) photos from me and my 2 friends experimenting with it.
Masked Selfie
Masked selfies are selfies where the photographer doesn't show their face or show their identity to the viewer. Here are some that me and my friends took just today.
Omar Victor Diop
- Victor Omar Diop's characters are all from history about characters and historical figures through time from African genetic relations around the world. The characters that Omar favours are;
- Dutty Boukman
- Trayvon Martin
- Nanny and Quao
- Alin Sitoe Diatta
- These characters are all famous people / pictures or events that have been forgotten through the process of time. These characters are all portrayed to be / are from African origin.
- His connection with the history of Africa is very close due to him being Senegalese. Through his work he can remember them and hopefully his work can bring attention to these historical figures.
- His advice to young people is to start now and you don’t need a professional camera because now even with a phone you can create beautiful images, and all ways show it.
- I would like to become forgotten people who made a stand for the right thing as the BLM protests have shown that everyone can help make a mark in history.

Mask andCostume selfie pt. 1
- I became a emo pirate with a red uni-brown and a pirate hat. My paper bag I cut to make a smooth chin and a smooth edge.
- I used pastels, I used a graphite pencil to do the outlines of my eyes and uni-brow including my mouth.
- The pictures came out great and me and Jimmy went in the picture together and were shaking hands. Alfie took the pictures of me and Jimmy.
- I do not know how to make it better.
- Omar Victor Diop's work inspired me to use the costumes to dress up.
- Yes, it really brung out the costume as a separate thing to the bag hats.
- Yes, if you are in frame or the centre of the picture, it is classified as a self portrait.

Mirror Selfies

EBI:
- I found new angles to take pictures and used the focus a lot.
EBI:
- I need to include part of my body or my face in the pictures.
Research Task
How long have mirror selfies been a trend?
Mirror Selfies have been a trend for a long time (since from the 19th century) and are still a trend. Why might a photographer use a mirror to take a selfie? It's easier than turning the camera round and taking a blind picture of your face that you don't know what your taking a picture of. Taking a picture of a mirror shows you in the mirror what you'll look like in the picture for yourself. |
Vivian Maier Questions
Who was Vivian Maier?
Vivian Maier is now a famous "secret" photographer who took pictures down the street, in an ally, in a mirror, in her house, ect. . She was so obsessed with taking pictures, she took over 150,000 photographs! But, she never revealed them, and mostly didn't view them herself. What three adjectives would you use to describe the photo you have chosen? Unknowing, Unexplained, Confused. What is interesting about the composition, shapes and contrast in the photo? The composition of the photo is very good, it has good angle and good focus. The shapes in the photo are a car and 2 children. The contrast of the picture of it being slightly darker in the car than the people. If you could ask Maier one question, what would it be? Why? Why take all those pictures? |
Selfie Collage
- Select the 6 images that you feel best represent you.
- Make a pile of these 6 pages on your desk.
- Take the top page and cut a hole in it (Note: it doesn't have to be perfect). Put both pieces at bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and tear it in half. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and cut out a shape at random. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and cut round an object. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and tear a strip from the (top or bottom) edge. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page, and cut or tear it in whichever way you choose. Put the pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Place the A3 sheet of cartridge paper in front of you (portrait or landscape format).
- Without altering them, arrange the pieces of paper from your pile on the A3 sheet to create a pleasing collage. Carefully photograph your first arrangement.
- Again, without altering them, repeat this process, re-arranging the various elements on the A3 sheet until you are happy with the results. Photograph carefully.
- You may now adapt the pieces in any way you like - cutting, tearing etc. Make a new collage, this time sticking them to the A3 sheet of cartridge paper.
- Photograph your finished collage carefully.
- Write a brief evaluation (WWW/EBI) reflecting on what it was like to make a collage by following instructions and how you feel about the results.
- If you complete all of this, try experimenting with layering the collage using the single-colour function on the photocopier.

The Cubist Selfie
Alma Haser is a great photographer and she takes lot's of pictures to then cut out some parts of it then move it around. I liked this picture by her particularly because it is simple but also lovely. I like the way she takes the flower and replaces his face with it. I think I could replicate it but with a different type of plant.

Kenneth Josephson & Francesca Woodman
Extended selfies writing task
Paragraph 1:
Describe what you can see in each of the photographs. Concentrate on the main subject matter of each image. Use your knowledge of the self-portraiture genre to help you. What kinds of self-portrait are they? How are they similar/different?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can see that in both photos that you cannot clearly see the person taking the photo. I can also see that there is at least one person's body part (for example, a hand, a face, an arm, a foot) in the photo. Both are unique styles of self-portraits and diverse ways of presenting them. The one by Kenneth Josephson is a self-portrait by only showing 1 part of the person’s body. The one by Francesca Woodman is a self-portrait showing multiple body parts but from different people. Both pictures subject are hands and are only focused on the hand. Everyone in shot is not shown clearly and can be interpreted as something / someone else.

Paragraph 2:
Describe what you can see in each of the photographs. Concentrate on the main subject matter of each image. Use your knowledge of the self-portraiture genre to help you. What kinds of self-portrait are they? How are they similar/different?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both photographers use an object to show where the subject of the picture is. The first photographer (Kenneth Josephson) uses a cardboard with a hole in it to show specifically where the subject is. The second photographer (Francesca Woodman) uses a doorway to show that inside the room is where the subject is and where we should focus our attention to.

Paragraph 3:
What is surprising, unexpected, or mysterious in each of these photographs? How has each photographer been creative or unconventional in their approach to the self-portrait?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both photographs are quite mysterious in their way because they are both taken like they have a hidden meaning. Like they want you to look at the subject but then something is happening off camera or away from the subject. Francesca has been creative by hiding both of her subjects behind an object to make them look ominous, like something you were not meant to see. Kenneth, on the other hand, has taken a photo while walking down the street without a real motive of what exactly he is taking a photo of. He just takes a photo of the hand instead.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Paragraph 4:
Explain which of these photographs you enjoy looking at most and how it might influence your own work.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I enjoy looking at Kenneth’s photo more than Francesca’s one since her one is blander and less going on while Kenneth’s is more active and vibrant. His has people walking and biking in the background while Francesca’s one just has a room, 2 subjects and a radiator. Quite bland, am I right? I feel Kenneth’s one influences my work more than Francesca’s since hers is inside and away from reality while Kenneth’s is outside which is the kind of photos I prefer.
